The Counsel to the Federal Government, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN) has rubbished rumours that the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) is not a criminal court but a sort of disciplinary committee for politicians. Disclosing to newsmen at the CCT, today, September 22, Mr Jacobs said the Code of Conduct Tribunal is powerful to prosecute the war against corruption as it is presently doing.
"The Code of Conduct Tribunal is powerful tribunal to fight corruption. It is time to allow the tribunal to function and if they function well corruption will be reduced in our country."
He also spoke on the problem averted by the Judiciary by not giving contradictory orders yesterday adding that it would have been a sad day for the nation.
He, however, said this is the first time in his years of practice that a case will be before three different courts at the same time.
"It would have been a sad for our nation. If the courts have not taken the steps that they have taken there would have been contradictory order from the three courts; the tribunal, the federal high court, and appeal court on the same day.
"Thank God the courts were able to save the name of the Judiciary yesterday. What they have done yesterday was to save every one of us from anarchy. Thank God proper things were done, and you could still see the abuse. They (defence counsel) still came today raising the same issue which the tribunal has ruled against. Thank God that despite their antics which we were able to summon and the trial is now fixed," he said.
The tribunal was adjourned to the 21 st , 22 nd and 23 rd of October by Justice Danladi Umar.
