Gerrard regrets Liverpool not signing Tottenham's Alli

The England international, who joined Tottenham during the winter transfer window before returning to MK Dons on loan, could have been an Anfield legend according to the midfielder.

Steven Gerrard thinks Liverpool should have moved to sign Dele Alli as he approached his departure from Anfield.

Gerrard announced his intention to leave Liverpool in January this year, just weeks before Alli joined Tottenham. The 19-year-old stayed with MK Dons for the remainder of the 2014-15 season.

And the former Reds captain, now playing for LA Galaxy, believes Alli could have been his ideal successor at Anfield.

"I was actually disappointed Liverpool didn't sign him," Gerrard told BT Sport.

"I thought he was certainly a player Liverpool might have tried to go for, especially with me coming to the end.

"He was certainly a player that I could see who could play for Liverpool for 10 or 15 years. He's certainly got that ability."

Alli has made 17 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham this season and has been capped by England four times, scoring in the friendly win over France earlier in November.

On the Anfield legend, Alli said in 2014: "Gerrard was a big influence on why I supported Liverpool."
