Matthias Sammer hailed Arturo Vidal's "power" after the midfielder completed a €40 million move to Bayern Munich from Juventus on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old forged a reputation as one of Europe's finest box-to-box midfielders during his four years with the Bianconeri and replaces Bastian Schweinsteiger at the Allianz Arena following his move to Manchester United.
And Sammer, the club's sporting director, was quick to laud Vidal's physical qualities as he was unveiled to the media.
He said: "He is physically strong, powerful, technically strong, he can score goals and is tactically good. He is also a winner with his way of playing football. Those qualities will be a good fit for Bayern."
Sammer - himself a midfielder during his playing days - was asked about comparisons with Vidal, but believes the Chile international is a unique player.
"The way he plays football impresses me. He is something special. I don't know if he is a similar player to what I was. But that doesn't matter. He is here now – and he is welcome."
Vidal has signed a contract until 2019 and becomes the club's second major signing of the summer following the arrival of Douglas Costa from Shakhtar Donetsk.
