Ex NBA star and dunk legend Darryl Dawkins, dies of a heart attack aged 58

The NBA community is in mourning at the moment following the death of one its legend Darryl Dawkins, also known as 'Chocolate Thunder'.

The explosive centre who was known for his powerful dunks and flamboyant personality, died on Thursday of a heart attack, according to a statement by his family said. He was 58.

In a 14-season NBA career he averaged 12 points, 6.1 assists and 1.4 blocks per game.

Off the field he was known for his outsized personality.

'Darryl touched the hearts and spirits of so many with his big smile and personality, ferocious dunks, but more than anything, his huge, loving heart,' the family said in a statement.
