Axel Witsel's agent has confirmed talks with AC Milan are "going in the right direction" but says negotiations are not easy.
The midfielder is keen on leaving Zenit St Petersburg for one of Europe's major leagues, with Milan's Serie A rivals Juventus also reportedly interested in the 26-year-old.
Although the Rossoneri remain the favourites to sign the Belgium international, his agent admits a deal is still some way off.
"It is no secret that for some time we have been in discussions with Milan," Riccardo Napolitano told
Tuttosport .
"It is not an easy negotiation, but we are working in the right direction. Alex has expressed his willingness to play in a highly competitive league.
"He wants a new tantalising experience."
On Saturday, Witsel's agent said Juventus had identified the player as their first choice target should Paul Pogba or Arturo Vidal leave the club, while having previously claimed he had said yes to Milan terms.
The Belgium international came through Standard Liege's youth system before joining Benfica in 2011 and leaving for Zenit a year later.
