Gerrard made his competitive debut for the Galaxy on Tuesday night in the U.S. Open Cup loss at Real Salt Lake, but on Friday he made his first start for the club in the league.
Following a Quincy Amarikwa double for San Jose, the Galaxy roared back with five unanswered goals, and Gerrard was at the heart of the first three.
Gerrard won a penalty kick for the Galaxy in the 30th minute, caught by Tommy Thompson's elbow during an aerial challenge. Though it appeared soft, referee Alan Kelly pointed to the spot and Robbie Keane duly converted.
Minutes later though, there was no doubting Gerrard's contribution, as he swept home a deflected cross with the side of his right foot, calmly leveling the game for the Galaxy and opening his MLS account on his league debut.
There was more to come from Gerrard and Keane in the second half. The former England international whipped in a dangerous low free kick from the left flank in the 64th minute, and the Irish striker flicked home from close range to give the Galaxy the lead.
It could have been even better just a few minutes later, as Gerrard curled a fantastic free kick off the bar from 25 yards out. The Galaxy would grab their fourth, however, as Keane completed his hat-trick with another goal from the spot with 10 minutes to play.
Gerrard received a standing ovation upon being substituted in the 88th minute, and there was still time for Sebastian Lleget to grab one more goal with a header to make it a comfortable win for the Galaxy.
