ArgentinaforwardLionel Messisays if he had scored in the World Cup final, people might have remembered his performances in the tournament more fondly.
The Barcelona star curled a shot wide of the post early in the second half as the Albiceleste eventually succumbed to a 1-0 defeat after extra time against Germany in Brazil.
Although he won the Golden Ball award as the tournament's best player, Messi's performances in the latter stages came in for criticism in some quarters, and the 27-year-old thinks it may have been different if he'd found the back of the net at the Maracana.
"I would have liked to play better in the semi-final and the final," Messi said in an interview withOle. "If I had scored that goal in the final, maybe people would have said my World Cup was excellent.
"Criticisms hurt me. The team had a great World Cup and it looked like the only player who played badly was me.
"Against Germany we had many opportunities to win. That's more painful ... It was very hard. Although, having played until the last day was the goal we had set for ourselves.
"Unfortunately we did not win the final, but Brazil's World Cup is over. Now a new cycle begins.
"We will not forget that we enjoyed what happened during the qualifiers and the World Cup; we had assembled a great group."
