Vanguard reports that the governor made his intention known on Tuesday in a letter submitted to the leadership of the party. He has also reportedly intensified consultations with stakeholders across the country comprising former Presidents.
It was gathered that the governor would soon make public his time table for his proposed nationwide consultation meeting with APC governors, former presidents, setting up of committees as well as the official opening of his campaign headquarters in Abuja and Edo State.
It was also gathered that Oshiomhole, who intends to convert his former governorship campaign office to his presidential campaign office in Edo State, is expected to be endorsed by majority of the APC governors. The notion, however, is bore out of the governor’s popularity, which cuts across the country, an advantage the APC might want to explore to stop President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The comrade governor, who is believed to be under persistent pressure from APC governors and some influential Nigerians to join the presidential race, has earlier hinted he was going to take a long break from politics after his governorship tenure ends in 2016.
While responding to the governor’s intention, Kaseem Afegbua, his Special Adviser stated that Oshiomhole, has the pedigree to run for the country’s president, and stressed that there was nothing appalling about the governor’s decision.
“I don’t know why it appears strange that Adams Oshiomhole is running for president? Does he not have the pedigree to do so or some people are just trying to be cynical about his ambition? Or the PDP is jittery, knowing fully well that Oshiomhole enjoys national support and a greater appeal than some of those presently eyeing the plum position” Afegbua said.
It would be recalled that on September 15, 2014, Governor Adams Oshiomhole, received about 2, 000 defectors from the state Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Igueben local government area of Edo State. Oshiomhole, had previously made his stand known against members of the state All Progressives Congress (APC) who defected to the PDP.
