Matuidi: PSG ready for greatness

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise
Matuidi says his side's victory over
Chelsea has left them feeling like they
can "do something great" in the
Champions League this season.
The reigning French champions took
the tie into extra time and earned a 2-2 draw with Jose Mourinho's
side at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, securing their route to
quarter-finals on away goals with an aggregate score of 3-3.
And Matuidi, who once again starred in a strong midfield for the
Parisians, says the result has given them the confidence to push on
and make their mark in Europe's elite club competition.
"I think we have gained real confidence. To knock out a team like
Chelsea is great for morale," Matuidi told RMC Sport.
"The result will give us strength and courage. We can do something
great in this competition."
The big-spending capital club have claimed back-to-back Ligue 1
titles following heavy investment from Qatar Sports Investments, but
are yet to get past the quarter-final stage of the Champions League
under their new owners.
"The goal was to do better than we did last year," Matuidi continued.
"Something great has been done. The Premier League leaders have
been eliminated, which is something.
"But the road ahead is still long. We do not know who we will face
next. There are still large obstacles ahead."
The 27-year-old France international went on to back boss Laurent
Blanc, whose future at the club is rumoured to depend on achieving
Champions League success.
"We must highlight our coach, who has been much maligned. It is
also his victory," Matuidi said.
"He put the team out and he got it right. He had the right words for us
at half time to give us the confidence we needed.
"We are all happy to have him as coach. We never had a problem with
him. His is the only European team in contention for four titles. We
can do something historic."
PSG remain on the hunt for every major title available to them this
season. They sit one point behind league leaders Lyon, face Saint-
Etienne in the semi-final of the French Cup and meet Bastia in the
League Cup final next month.
